Bottom Feeders vs Yankees Game #1

Rube Marquard vs Ron Guidry@ Yankee Stadium

Guidry K’s 9 In One Run Yankee Victory

My personally autographed Ron Guidry ball.

“To Kevin Ron Guidry 1989”

With the score tied 2-2 in the last of the 8th, the Yankees had Graig Nettles on 2nd with 1 out and Bucky Dent due next. Because the Yankee bench is terrible for this series, I had to let the weak hitting Dent bat in a key situation. Never a big fan, I hoped for the best. Dent came through with a seeing eye groundball single up the middle, scoring Nettles with the game winner.

Ron Guidry struck out 9 in 8 innings and was relieved by Goose Gossage in the 9th after giving up a lead off single to pinch hitter George Kell. Gossage never makes a save look easy. After striking out Bill Mazeroski, he unleashed a wild pitch sending Kell to 2nd. Jim Bottomley scorched a ball ticketed for right field, but Chris Chambliss made a great diving stop, getting the out at 1st while the tying run moved over to 3rd. A walk to Lloyd Waner put runners on the corners, but Dave Bancroft grounded out to Bucky Dent to end the game.

  1. So Bucky Dent beats the HOF’ers. Why am I not surprised?
