Action from the 1913 World Series

Just out of curiosity I tried to determine what game this was, and who the pitcher and batter might be. I can’t really figure what team is playing the field but I know the ballpark is the Polo Grounds. It’s a left-handed pitcher vs. a left-handed batter, with nobody on base. So that narrows it down. It can only be Eddie Plank for the A’s, or Rube Marquard for the Giants. Checking Baseball Reference, it can only be Rube Marquard vs Eddie Murphy, or Eddie Collins. Or Eddie Plank vs Larry Doyle. Since Rube Marquard started game #1 for the Giants, and Eddie Murphy was the lead off hitter in the game, I’m going to guess that this picture is the pictorial record of the 1st at bat of the 1913 World Series.

A pitcher’s dual between Chief Bender and Al Demaree ended on a 9th inning error, giving the A’s a hard fought 3-2 victory.

With 1 out in  the bottom of the 9th, and the score tied 2-2 the A’s Wally Schang tripled off reliever Art Fromme. The next 2 batters were walked intentionally to set up a force at every base. A’s left fielder Rube Oldring tapped an easy ground ball to Fromme setting up a tailor-made force at home. But Fromme dropped the ball allowing Wally Schang to score the game winner.

The A’s lead this series 3-1
